Celebrate . . . !
but we must not forget!
on May 8, 1945 World War II in Europe came to an end.
It was a time to celebrate our freedom and begin a new chapter for Canada.
The freedom came at a great cost in human lives.
It also, was the beginning of a slow recovery for the returning veterans.
They returned with happy memories of their 'brotherhood', but also with physical injuries, battle scars and painful memories of the bitter conflict.
Read the war diary of the
Royal Regina Rifles Regiment
as they fought their way through France, Holland to Germany.

Journey to Ortona
Watch
"Ancestors in the Attic" .
( Journey to Ortona - Episode 44 )
for a story about Melville Madden, a Lacombe soldier killed on Christmas Eve 1944, during the battle for Ortona in Italy during WWII.
" On Christmas Eve 1943, 28-year-old Melville Madden was in the thick of one of the bloodiest battles in the history of the Canadian military - the Battle for Ortona.
Like the rest of his regiment, Madden was looking forward to an historic Christmas dinner organized by his unit, the Seaforth Highlanders. But he was also looking forward to something even more important - a Christmas reunion with his older brother, Cecil, who was also fighting in Italy. Unfortunately, Melville never arrived at their reunion. Sometime on Christmas Eve he was killed in action. His family has no idea how he died. Until now.
Julian Sacher, a high school student from Lacombe, Alberta - Melville Madden's hometown - is about to embark on a journey to Ortona. With the help of Ancestors in the Attic, he will try to discover the truth behind Madden's death, and, if he can, finally answer the questions Melville’s family have asked for more than 65 years. "

Who is a Veteran?
( as defined by Veterans Affairs Canada - [VAC] )
Any former member of the Canadian Forces who successfully
underwent basic training and
is honourably discharged.
When people think of Veterans, many immediately picture someone who served in the first World War, Second World War or the Korean War. While many Canadians recognize these traditional Veterans, the same may not always be true for Canadian Forces (CF) Veterans – those who served Canada following the Korean War.
In fact, some former Canadian Forces members don’t even see themselves as Veterans. Veterans Affairs Canadian (V AC) wants to change this and is working to ensure Canadian Forces Veterans receive the honour and recognition they have earned and so richly deserve.
VAC considers any former member of the Canadian Forces who releases with an honourable discharge and who successfully underwent basic training to be a Veteran.
This Veteran status recognizes the risk Canadian Forces members assume by wearing the uniform and pledging allegiance.
Canada’s modern-day Veterans are carrying on the traditions, values and legacy of wartime Veterans and all Canadians, especially our youth, should be aware of their accomplishments and sacrifices.
VAC continues to adapt its Canada Remembers program to help Canadians better understand and appreciate Canada’s CF community. The Department encourages all Canadians to learn about the sacrifices and achievements of Canada’s Veterans during times of war, military conflict and peace, Whenever possible, Canadians should also become involved in remembrance activities to help preserve their legacy for future generations of Canadians.
